Uffculme Green Team
Uffculme Green Team covers the village of Uffculme, and the focus of our attention is to engage the community to make it a greener village. As one of the Green Team frequently reminds us ‘Uffculme first, then the world!’.
In 2014 our Green Day was our first ever event and from that the Green Team was born. Since then it has just kept growing. We have had two more Green Days since that first one and hope the one postponed from 2020 will take place in 2022.
We were the first village in Mid Devon to join the water bottle refill scheme and receive the Surfers Against Sewage (single use) Plastic Free Communities award. The pandemic restrictions meant that our plans for a Community Fridge had to be quickly adapted. Despite the challenges, this area of activity is thriving. We have a network of volunteers collecting and redistributing surplus food 364 days a year from a local food store. We also collect regularly from a nearby factory producing organic vegan food and share this with other community fridge groups. We participate in various recycling schemes (e.g. Terracycle, medicine blister packs, milk bottle tops, Devon County Council’s ‘Recycle and Raise’ etc.). With support and funding from the Parish Council and the owner of the local pub, the Ostler Inn, an outside drinking fountain was installed in the village.
We now have several different branches which make up the Green Team ‘tree’, including:
- Wildlife section
- Uff Comm Fridge
- Bus shelter refurbishment
- Litter picking
- Connecting the Culm – a number of members are involved
- Green Day
- Recycling
- Community Fridge
- Repair cafe
For the future, our aspirations are very modest – we just want Uffculme to be the greenest village in Mid Devon!
