Transition Town Okehampton
About us
Transition Town Okehampton is a new group aiming to connect the community to come together, to increase local community resilience and build a regenerative local economy, by implementing a range of projects that reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and help mitigate climate change. Having finalised our constitution in March of this year (2024) Transition Town Okehampton have been gradually getting themselves known in the town. We introduced our mission initially by showing the Transition Network film, ‘Demain’ in April.
Current projects
We were introduced to the Wild Oke group and immediately became involved in assisting Wild Oke by running a survey to measure residents views on a green field site boasting a wealth of wildlife, within a residential neighbourhood. The site is the home of dormice, bats, hedgehogs, slow worms and an abundance of butterflies, wildflower species and other wildlife. With plans in the offing to build houses on the site, we will follow with a survey of the available brown field sites in the town.
The Big Green Week was busy with a number of community groups being involved. Transition Town Okehampton served cream teas at a ‘Pollinator activity day’ at Okehampton’s Community Garden and showed a really thought provoking and beautifully presented Swedish documentary film called ‘ Imprint ’. The film followed and interviewed individuals in various alternative lifestyles across Sweden.
We are gradually holding conversations with individuals from a range of community groups across Okehampton; holding cake sales at local coffee mornings and next month inviting a group of about ten community representatives to a listening and learning community supper.
At the moment our mission is to create links between active community groups in Okehampton and to reach out to newcomers in the new developments on the outskirts of the town. We have been invited to give a presentation to the Town Council to explain in what ways we can represent the community’s interests and follow through with actions.
