Plastic Free Okehampton
About us
Plastic Free Okehampton is made up of a steering group of local residents and councillors who want to help our town reduce its dependence on single-use plastics. We aim to do this by encouraging local businesses, community groups and individuals to replace single-use plastic items with appropriate alternatives and to signpost people to businesses in town that support alternative solutions to single-use plastics.
What we do
Although our group was primarily formed to follow and implement the SAS Plastic Free Community programme, we also support, promote and co-ordinate other national environmental initiatives. We work hard to support local environmental initiatives by linking up groups, schools and individuals.
Recent projects
Green Drinks is our most recent project which started in September 2023. Green Drinks provides an opportunity for like-minded local residents, business leaders, voluntary groups and individuals to meet informally once a month at a local venue. We usually have a local speaker to talk to the group about an environmental project and then we spend the rest of the evening networking, swapping ideas and generally enjoying positive conversations about local environmental issues and initiatives. Green Drinks has, I believe, established itself as an uplifting opportunity to meet with others who share the same passions for the environment.
Future Plans
We are slowly starting to make contact with businesses in town to encourage them to become plastic-free champions and are very happy that our first business has successfully achieved their Bronze and Silver awards and are well on their way to achieving Gold. We will also continue to sign up more local businesses to become ‘Refill’ outlets and publicise the 18 businesses that provide free drinking water or other single-use plastic alternatives.
