Sustainable Tiverton
Sustainable Tiverton started in 2008 as a small project covering a few villages and has grown to a network of volunteer-led and run projects covering the whole Tiverton area. Our many volunteers work to build a healthier, more sustainable, resilient and low carbon healthy economy and environment for the future.
Our food projects collect surplus food for use by local people, provide juicing for autumn fruits supporting community members to grow and use food sustainably and make gardens bee and wildlife-friendly. Share and Repair projects repair household items, promote sharing by holding household goods in a communal library to borrow, or by passing them on for reuse, and share skills in repairing or re-purposing items. Nature projects take practical action to restore nature and reduce flooding– planting and maintaining trees in rural areas and towns and working with other transition groups to combat pollution of the River Exe. Transport and Energy projects aim for more safe walking and cycling transport options and affordable ways for people to reduce home energy use. The Tiverton Pannier Market mural, commissioned by Sustainable Tiverton and designed by local people, and the positive artistic vision in our youth art display in the Eco hub show a Net Zero Vision for Tiverton.
Recent initiatives include moving into our Ecohub, the first premises in central Tiverton which supports our projects, and the preparation and opening of Share Shop, a community library of things in Tiverton to help people use fewer resources. Sustainable Food Group, Energy Group, a Tiverton to Exeter cycle path group and Youth Reach research involving young adults have also recently started. We look forward to the expansion of these activities and the continued growth of our recent ShareShop and River Exe projects, aided by grant-funded temporary workers. Further grant funding will be needed to continue and expand our work!
We always need volunteers to help – there are many different roles. Please find out more about our projects at www.sustainabletiverton.org.uk and use the newsletter link to see current information.
