SSB was set up in 2006 and is a charitable company limited by guarantee.
There are many project groups run by volunteers including:
– Market Garden and Orchard – in the planning stage as part of a large tree planting scheme in collaboration with South Hams District Council and the Woodland Trust
– School Garden – primary school children growing fruits and vegetables in the school grounds
– Community Compost – turning garden waste into a valuable soil improver
– Community Fridge – excess food from retailers and public made available for free
– FareShare Market – saving waste food, feeding the community, saving money
– Food – promoting healthy, cheap cooking and eating
– Repair Cafe – repairing small household items
– Wood and hedges – coppicing, hedgelaying, tree planting, selling dried wood for fuel
– Energy – promoting sustainable energy for households and public buildings, advice drop-ins, thermal energy cameras,
– Wildlife areas – initiating and managing small public areas for wildlife
– Events – talks, films, workshops, drop-ins
– Community Hub – space for meetings, events, drop-ins. Run in collaboration with South Brent & District Caring
– Youth Liaison – promoting engagement in SSB’s aims and activities eg with the primary school, Scouting groups
– Bikes – 3 bikes available for borrowing
– Litter picking – occasional sessions
