Newton Abbot CIC
About us/who we are
Newton Abbot Community Interest Company (the CIC) was established in 2008 in the town of Newton Abbot in south Devon. Although originally set-up to deliver the projects and priorities from the Newton Abbot & District Community Plan, the CIC’s work has broadened over the years in response to community needs and opportunities.
The CIC is involved in a wide range of projects and activities. Our work is centred around the management of two community centres – The Buckland Centre and The Courtenay Centre. We run the two centres, and many of the activities that go on inside, including groups for people of all ages from toddlers to pensioners.
The Courtenay Centre hosts a community fridge and a community garden (pictured). Food grown in the community garden is used in the fridge, in our community cafe and provides ingredients for ‘free soup Thursday’ where we offer free soup at the cafe.
The Buckland Centre offers a range of activities to support the local community – including debt advice and support, a youth club for primary school aged children and social and activity groups for older people.
Newton Abbot CIC is a not-for-profit organisation. As such, we rely on grant funding for all our project work. Current activities are funded by a variety of sources including the National Lottery and Newton Abbot Town Council. Income generated from room rental at the community centres is reinvested in the overhead costs of running those centres.
