Ashreigney & Riddlecombe Nature Recovery Group
Who we are
Ashreigney & Riddlecombe Nature Recovery Group was founded in 2022 by a group of residents in the wider parish who were responding to North Devon Biosphere’s plea to make a “Pledge for Nature”. We decided to form a group to work on making our parish more sustainable and to help wildlife.
What we do
So far we have accomplished some good projects. These include making and distributing over 100 nest boxes of all types to encourage pied flycatchers, blue tits, robins and dippers. We then moved onto a Swift project, starting with a fabulous and inspiring talk from Mark Smyth. We made about 40 swift boxes and put up in various places in the parish with the necessary callers, we are only the second year in so as studies have shown it may be that next year we’ll get our first actual nesting swifts in these boxes. We have been very involved in citizen science and have done ancient woodland and meadow surveys, working closely with DBRC. We are currently in our Barn Owl and Bat project phase.
Moving forward we are looking forward to getting more involved with other members of the community including younger members and hopefully getting some projects to protect the local streams and rivers underway. The future of our wildlife is dependent on the involvement of young people.
We are a part of the North Devon Biosphere and are looking forward to more involvement with some of their partners moving forward.
