The Great Big Green Week
The Great Big Green Week is back! From June 8th to 16th, communities across the UK will come together to tackle climate change and protect nature in the country’s biggest celebration of community action. Whether by attending local events or sharing personal efforts to combat climate change, there are countless ways for everyone to get involved.
Since the first Great Big Green Week in September 2021, it has grown into a massive national event. Each year, tens of thousands of people participate, showcasing the everyday actions that collectively make a significant impact. The first year was the largest event for climate and nature ever seen in the UK. Communities came together once more in September 2022, with over a quarter of a million people getting involved.
Last year, in 2023, the momentum continued with widespread participation from national organisations, businesses, and media outlets, all putting pressure on the government to enhance its climate action policies.
Here at CAG Devon, we’re excited to highlight the brilliant initiatives happening across our network. we have lots of groups celebrating and championing community action to tackle climate change. Here’s a glimpse of the activities planned across Devon for Great Big Green Week:
Turn the Tide Teignbridge Festival
Turn the Tide Teignbridge is set to host a vibrant 3-day festival from June 7th to 9th. The festivities begin on June 7th with a fundraiser featuring Troubadour Theatre’s “Whose Wild World?” On World Oceans Day, June 8th, an 18-meter whale installation, eco-friendly stalls, and a variety of activities will take centre stage, followed by an evening of music and dancing. June 9th will focus on Dawlish Action, promoting wellbeing, creativity, and community engagement with music, activities, and support from local businesses, culminating in another evening of entertainment. Plastic Free Okehampton
Plastic Free Okehampton is organising a series of events throughout the week. The celebrations start on June 11th with a session about The Hazel Dormouse at the Eco Hut. This will be followed by a volunteer session on June 12th in Simmons Park and their popular Green Drinks at Okehampton’s Community Garden. June 13th will feature a session on Habitat Creation and Management of Simmons Park, and on June 15th, you can help create homes for endangered species. The week will conclude with an exciting Buzzy Bee Activity Event, where you can learn about pollinators in the community garden, with plants for sale and refreshments available.
Sustainable Crediton
Sustainable Crediton invites everyone to an open day at Sustainabubble on June 15th. Visitors can see first hand how Sustainable Crediton makes a difference to the environment and share their ideas. Previous events have included activities such as printing wrapping paper, making bug hotels, food waste management, and seed saving.
Sustainable Tiverton
Sustainable Tiverton kicks off The Great Big Green Week with their monthly repair café at Tiverton Library and a litter-picking event on June 8th. Other activities include the Wilder Communities Café at Old Heathcoat Centre on June 11th and a lending session with Share Shop Tiverton on June 15th. It’s an action-packed week in Tiverton!
Transition Tavistock
Transition Tavistock will hold their annual meeting on June 11th, featuring a screening of the film “Hungry for Change” and a discussion at Tavistock URC. From June 8th to 21st, you can find their Great Big Green Week display at Tavistock Library.
