Uffculme Green Team
Uffculme Green Team literally covers the village of Uffculme, and the focus of our attention is to make it a greener village. As one of the Green Team frequently reminds us ‘Uffculme first, then the world!’. That is our aim, but we must start small – the world will take a bit longer!
In 2014 our Green Day was our first ever event and from that the Green Team was born. What is rather amusing is the fact that it was going to be a coffee morning, but the Coffee Morning idea just kept growing! Since then, the Green Team has also just kept growing.
We started taking part in Uffculme Show (2015) having a ‘give or take’ stall which was very popular, and we have been going ever since, expanding our ideas and making ourselves known to local people.
Our main achievements so far have been to be the first village in mid-devon to join the Refill scheme and receive the Surfers Against Sewage (single use) Plastic Free Communities award. We are also very excited about our community fridge coming into operation as soon as possible. We may be the first village in Mid Devon to do this as well, although a couple of towns have paved the way before us). Our Terracycle/Ellies Fund recycling scheme is very successful.
We are also very grateful of the support from the Parish Council and Simon Stimson, owner of the Ostler Inn, for funding and installing an outside drinking fountain in the village. We will be celebrating this as soon as we are able after the coronavirus restrictions.
Another important activity is our twice-yearly litter pick in and around the village. Sadly, the continual problem of litter seems to keep on going.
Recently, we have been able to form several different branches which make up the Green Team ‘tree’ and to see the group progress like this is incredibly exciting:
- Wildlife section – recording all kinds of wildflowers, birds, animals, butterflies, etc
- Uffculme Community Fridge – setting it up and organising the collection of food etc
- Bus shelter refurbishment
- Litter pick
- Connecting the Culm – to see how we can support the project and be involved
- Green Day
For the future, our aspirations are very modest – we just want Uffculme to be the ‘greenest village’ in Mid Devon!
