Tiverton Tree Team

The Tiverton Tree Team began in September 2019, with the aim of planting 1000 trees in and around Tiverton during the winter of 2019/20. The hope was to engage as many people as possible in positive action to tackle the climate crisis and reverse the loss of biodiversity.

The new group advertised for people, land and money, and were amazed by the response! In a week at the end of October there were planting events at eight sites, including four schools where children planted several hundred tree seeds for the future.

By the end of March 2020, Tiverton Tree Team had:

  • worked on more than a dozen sites, many of them public and community sites
  • received donations of over £4,000 plus over 1000 trees and tree guards
  • engaged over 100 volunteers, often 80 turning up on a single day
  • sown around 500 tree seeds, and most importantly planted 4,650 trees!

It wasn’t just about numbers. Each tree had a tree guard, a cardboard mat to keep the weeds down and a bucket of mulch. The quality was in the community too working with toddlers and children inspired to plant their first tree, and older people who had been planting for decades. One volunteer said that the planting was their therapy in the face of the state of the world.

There was great support from Mid Devon District Council as well. Planning has now started for more tree planting schemes in the winter of 2020/21 and beyond.
