Behind the scenes at CAG Devon, we’ve been getting to know new patches of Devon County, forging connections with dynamic groups committed to environmental causes. It’s an exciting time and that resonates as new members join the CAG Devon network, bringing fresh ideas and inspiring energy!
The geographic spread of these groups mirrors the diverse area of Devon County itself. From Proper Job on the northeast edge of Dartmoor to Kingsbridge Climate Action in the South Hams, Chardstock Eco Group in East Devon, Ermington Environmental in South Hams, and Torridge Growing Together in the Bideford area of Torridge, bringing together communities from various districts in the county. The array of activities undertaken by these groups, from river restoration projects, repair and reuse and biodiversity advocacy to community energy initiatives and sustainable food production, reflects the varied interests and expertise that contribute to the environmental landscape of Devon. As we welcome these groups into the CAG Devon network, we’re excited about the mix of districts joining forces to create a more sustainable and interconnected future for the county.
Proper Job: Reclaim, Reuse, Recycle
Based in West Devon, Proper Job stands as one of the UK’s pioneering community reuse centres. Nestled on the northeast edge of Dartmoor, this charity aims to divert reusable items from landfills, offering a treasure trove of pre-loved items at affordable prices. From baths to garden furniture, Proper Job promotes conservation, waste management, and recycling initiatives. Join their training sessions and skill-sharing workshops to champion the benefits of reusing and recycling in the modern age.
Kingsbridge Climate Action
In South Hams, Kingsbridge Climate Action is a community-focused group addressing the climate and nature emergency through positive and engaging initiatives. From monthly repair cafes to projects like Friends of the Estuary and the Pesticide Free Campaign, they actively contribute to a greener town. Their ongoing efforts include community energy initiatives, Transition Streets, biodiversity advocacy, and outreach events to raise awareness and inspire change.
Chardstock Eco Group
Chardstock Eco Group is in East Devon. It’s a community based environmental organisation, that embraces a broad environmental agenda. Engaging in activities like river restoration projects, litter picking, plastic free towns, citizen science surveys and raising awareness, they actively contribute to the betterment of their community. Recognised for their commitment, they’ve received awards such as the Devon Wildlife Trust Wilder Communities Award and the Saving Devon’s Treescapes award.
Ermington Environmental
Ermington Environmental Based in South Hams, focuses on making the village as sustainable as possible in response to climate change. With a focus on nature and energy projects, they explore renewable energy possibilities, improve the health of the River Erme, increase biodiversity, and engage with local schools. The group actively organises talks and presentations to educate and involve the local community in their sustainability efforts.
Torridge Growing Together
Torridge Growing Together, based in Torridge, is a small but diverse group with a vision for positive change in the community. As a gardening group, they encourage biodiversity and sustainable food production in the Bideford area. Committed to creating an inclusive environment, they aim to address food poverty, poor health, and social isolation by empowering people of all abilities to make a purposeful impact on the community.
