SUMMARY:Growing Change Together: Building Food Resilience from the Ground Up
DESCRIPTION:Our food system is facing huge challenges — from climate change\, overuse of pesticides and ecological breakdown to rising food insecurity and inequality. \nCommunity groups like ours are already playing a vital role in building fairer\, more resilient local food networks. Whether you’re running a food bank\, growing on a community allotment\, organising a food share\, or supporting your local food hub\, this workshop is a chance to connect\, reflect\, and take the next steps together. \nWe’ll explore the barriers and opportunities we’re facing locally\, share practical ideas for increasing impact\, and look at how we can work more strategically to build sustainable\, healthy\, and just food systems. \nWorking Better Together for Local Food Resilience\nLocal food growers\, foodbanks\, larders\, community kitchens\, and food charities can have a far greater impact when they connect and collaborate. By building strong local food networks\, sharing resources\, mapping surplus and need\, and aligning growing efforts with community demand\, we can reduce waste and improve access to fresh\, nutritious food. Joint training\, shared infrastructure\, and coordinated volunteers help strengthen capacity\, while collective action can influence local policies\, secure land for growing\, and encourage public institutions to buy local. Together\, we can build stronger\, more resilient local food systems rooted in sustainability\, fairness\, and food justice. \nSome ideas that we may discuss: \n\nGleaning groups that collect surplus from farms for local foodbanks.\nCommunity fridges stocked with produce from local gardens and allotments.\nHarvest swaps between home growers and community kitchens.\nCooking workshops Cooking workshops that build community through shared food experiences — baking\, making\, and eating together while exploring different conversation topics. Workshops can focus on food staples or seasonal recipes that make use of local gluts and are especially welcoming to foodbank clients and community members looking to connect.\nPesticide Residue and Soil Health: There is growing concern about the impact of pesticides and declining soil health on our food system\, with evidence showing increased pest resistance\, the disruption of vital microbial networks in topsoil\, and reduced nutrient density in the food we eat — all of which pose risks to both human health and the wider environment.\nLocal food charters – a roadmap for building a better food future — shaped by the community to guide values and priorities.\n\nCraig Jolly from the Mushroom Food Network in Exmouth will be joining us to share the inspiring work he’s been doing to connect the community—delivering local food to those in need\, running bread-making classes\, hosting lunchtime meet-ups for home workers\, and bringing people together through pizza-making sessions.  He’ll be bringing some of his delicious homemade bread to share alongside a hearty soup made from organic local produce provided by the Eco Hub. The soup will be cooked on their Tawi Stove\, which not only prepares the meal but also produces biochar in the process. \nWe will meet in our polytunnel (weather permitting)\, so please dress up warmly and wear waterproof footwear.

SUMMARY:Biochar - launch of our new research project with Uni of Plymouth. Meet biochar\, soil\, regenerative farming and biomimicry experts.
DESCRIPTION:Come to Blackdown Hills EcoHub and meet our research partners from Plymouth University who will introduce our project. Guest presenter Nicola Peel will share her vast experience of biochar and regenerative farming. Nicola has been working for over 20 years in the Ecuadorean Amazon. In 2016 she started an agroforestry project for the charity Rainforest Saver and is now working with around 100 farmers and 6 agricultural colleges. Their mission is to prevent tropical deforestation by regenerating the soil. Using the method of inga alley cropping they have had remarkable results. Nicola has spoken this year at the International Forest Gardening Symposium and The Oxford Real Farming Conference. Here is an email testimonial from Mike Donovan\, editor & publisher of Practical Farm Ideas www.farmideas.co.uk. Nicola is a Solutionist and regenerative agriculture is one of the crucial solutions we all need to be discussing wherever in the world we live. \nWe’ll also be joined by Carbon Farmers who have built an amazing biochar stove (with Esse/Aston University) which we’ll use to cook food\, whilst making biochar from twigs. James from Genesis Green Grocers\, Honiton has kindly agreed to cook with us and is bringing along his BBQ smoker to create delicious food\, hopefully with some of our veg from the Food Growing Community Field. \nHideo\, a research student from Reading University will share his findings on why there is such a slow take up for business/farming/households to use biochar. Phil and Rob\, local biochar experts will give us an update on carbon credit discussions and chemical properties of different feedstocks. \nIf you plan to join us\, please bring a camping/festival chair\, wear old clothes as we’re in a field\, please car share if you can as there is limited parking space.\nWe’ll have several stalls to raise money for our Blackdown Hills Eco Hub activities\, so you’ll be able to buy plants\, biochar\, (bring a box or waterproof bag for cheaper refills)\, sourdough bread\, pastries and homemade jam! Feel free to bring drinks to share.

SUMMARY:Blackdown Hills Eco Hub - Eco-Friendly Christmas Decorations Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We’d like to invite anyone interested in sharing their practical skills in creating Christmas wreaths\, garlands\, and decorations from natural or plant materials to join us for an afternoon of crafting in a polytunnel at our Blackdown Hills Eco Hub (Trimplants\, Combe Raleigh – bottom field). We’ll discuss practical ideas on how we can all reduce plastic\, waste and excessive spending on often unwanted ‘things’ and have a more authentic and stress free Christmas\, putting those we love at the centre. Don’t bin any decorations you already have that could be added to your creation\, reuse\, repurposing and extending the life of what we already own is important. \nTrimplants will supply plant materials\, you’re welcome of course to also bring your own. Please dress up warmly as we’ll be in a very well ventilated polytunnel (thus reducing any Covid risk)! Please bring gloves and secateurs if you need them. \nWe will have hot drinks available\, a mince pie and some hot wine to finish with. \nYou’ll also have an opportunity to purchase plants if you wish. All proceeds will go to our Blackdown Hills Transition Group / Trimplants Eco Hub fund. \nIt is still possible to catch and spread COVID-19\, even if you are fully vaccinated.  We’d like to ask if you have any cold/flu like symptoms on the day to not take any risks in spreading the disease and stay at home. We want to play our part in mitigating any transmission. \nCheck out our Facebook event for further info. \nWe look forward to seeing you there.
