SUMMARY:Online Collaborate: Positive Tipping Points Toolkit Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join CAG Devon and Somerset for an engaging session with Peter Lefort\, who runs the Green Futures Network at the University of Exeter\, helping to apply the latest climate and environmental research into practice for organisations across the world. He has recently co-created the Positive Tipping Points Toolkit\, an open-source resource for applying a systems approach to working for transformative change. Peter also used to work on the CAG Project in Oxfordshire many moons ago\, and was the Co-Chair of the international Transition Network for 7 years. \nIn this session we will unpack the recently-launched Positive Tipping Points Toolkit\, a free resource co-produced to support the application of the latest research into how tipping points can occur in environmental and social systems. Through a series of interactive example tools\, you will learn more about the Positive Tipping Points framework\, and how it can be applied to support our work for change at local\, national\, and international levels of scale. \nCAG Devon and several of our groups helped shape this resource during a 2024 workshop\, where we explored how communities can influence positive tipping points and many will remember Peter from his keynote session at SkillShare24. \nThere’ll be plenty of space for questions and discussion\, and a chance to reflect on how this approach could strengthen the work of community action groups across our networks.

SUMMARY:Fixy Collaborate: How to Host a Tech Drop‑Off Point
DESCRIPTION:Join CAG Devon and CAG Somerset for a relaxed Q&A session to find out more about the Fixy Project and how your community action group could host a tech drop‑off point as part of a growing network across Devon and Somerset. \nFixy is a South West initiative that collects and refurbishes unwanted smart tech to help cut e‑waste and support people facing digital poverty. Working with Donate IT\, the team is setting up 40 new secure drop‑off points across Somerset\, Devon\, North Somerset and Dorset\, making it easier for people to donate laptops\, tablets\, mobile phones and other smart devices. Every item is securely wiped and refurbished for reuse\, or responsibly recycled if it can’t be repaired. \nFixy is now looking for community groups with suitable venues who might be interested in hosting a drop‑off point. In this session\, Linda from the Fixy team will talk through what’s involved — from time commitments and venue requirements to equipment and collection logistics. You’ll also have plenty of time to ask any questions you have.

SUMMARY:CAG Safeguarding Training session (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This free course is exclusively available to members of CAG Devon and CAG Somerset only. \nThe CAG Project recognises the importance of safeguarding and our shared responsibility to protect children and vulnerable adults from harm. To help groups feel confident in identifying and responding to any issues that may arise\, we are working with Ade Murphy from Creating Solutions to offer online safeguarding training. \nSafeguarding training is vital for community groups as it equips members with the skills to recognise and address signs of abuse or neglect\, promoting early intervention and protection for vulnerable individuals. It also fosters a culture of vigilance and accountability within the group\, enhancing trust and solidarity among members. It ensures compliance with legal requirements\, providing practical guidance on responding to concerns effectively. \nAde Murphy has been delivering Safeguarding Training for more than 30 years. As Safeguarding Lead for the Youth and Community Service in North Somerset\, Ade delivered training for Youth Workers and Community organisations across the area. As the Training and Staff Development Manager for a drugs and alcohol agency\, he continued as Safeguarding lead for the organisation\, whilst delivering annual training for staff\, volunteers and trustees. As a freelance trainer he continues to deliver to Village Hall trustees and community groups across Somerset and works with individual groups to support and develop their safeguarding policies and practice. \nIn this session you will have the opportunity to work with Ade and other CAG groups to understand your safeguarding responsibilities\, use case studies to explore a range of potential safeguarding scenarios\, and build on your confidence and knowledge in this area. \nAll CAG member groups must have a safeguarding policy in place.

SUMMARY:Volunteers - finding\, managing and supporting them (and yourself!)
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are the bedrock of communities. So much good is done by volunteers\, and so much good can come to people by volunteering. It’s not without its challenges though and many CAG Devon groups have reported a drop in volunteer numbers post-covid. \nThere’s still as much to be done\, so how do we find and recruit new volunteers\, and support them to be happy and productive with the time that they give? And how do we look after ourselves so that we don’t burnout through taking on too much? \nThis 90 minute online session will explore some of these issues and come up with practical\, effective tips to help support personal wellbeing as a volunteer. \nFacilitator: This session will be facilitated by Anja Kroening-Maynard\, Community Development Worker\, Assessor and Trainer from Teignbridge CVS. Anja has been working for Teignbridge CVS since 2009\, starting out as the Volunteer Centre Coordinator.  She has many years’ experience in community development work and teaching and training people of different ages\, abilities and backgrounds in anything from circus skills to ESOL and Volunteer Management.  Anja’s passion is developing and delivering relevant and engaging courses enabling learners to develop their skills in a supportive environment. ” I also feel very strongly about enabling people to take an active part in their local community and enabling groups to affect change.”

SUMMARY:CAG Devon SkillShare 2021 Plus
DESCRIPTION:We’re finalising the details for what promises to be a great event.  We’re keeping it online again for 2021\, and are excited to be coming together to learn\, share\, celebrate and be inspired.  Hot on the heels of COP26 we’re going to exploring the themes around how imagination and storytelling can galvanise communities to be the change they want to see.  Our overarching aim is “Creating our Future Story”.  If you couldn’t make last year\, here’s a snippet of what SkillShare is all about. \nSkillShare (on Saturday 13th Nov) is open to all.  SkillShare Plus (on Monday 15th Nov) is focussed more on the work of our CAG Devon membership. \nWe have two great speaker with us to get the conversations going. Then a Q&A panel discussion plus some time for networking and practical activities shared by Peter. \n  \nWhere is Devon at in tackling the climate emergency? \nYou’ll be hearing from Emily Reed from the Devon Climate Emergency (DCE) about DCE’s work\, findings from the recent Climate Assembly\, what’s next for the Interim Carbon Plan\, and what part CAG Devon groups play in contributing to the delivery of the plan. \n  \nUnderstanding systems and the impact of local climate action. \nPeter Lefort (Uni of Exeter) will be outlining new research around positive tipping points\, which can make sense of the complex way that change happens around us. Using examples from community-based groups (including from CAG Oxfordshire)\, he’ll also be sharing two practical exercises to explore how these ideas can help environmental organisations and groups to tell their story\, both to themselves and to others.  These stories can attract new volunteers\, partners\, funds and be the driving motivation for further positive climate action. \n  \nDetails and booking here. \n  \n  \n  \n

\nIf you couldn’t make last year\, here’s a snippet of what SkillShare is all about. \nCreating our Future Story – Sat 13th Nov\, online\, 10am–1pm \nIs winning hearts and minds the key to realising our vision of sustainable communities in Devon?  How can we create action through imagination and storytelling? Join us to hear from: \nRob Hopkins: From what if to what next – building our sustainable future\nVoted one of the Independent’s top 100 environmentalists\, Co-Founder of Transition Town Totnes\, Rob Hopkins has recently penned ‘From what is to what if: unleashing the power of imagination to create the future we want.’ Hear from Rob about how communities can use creative\, positive thinking to secure rapid and dramatic change. \nFotoNow: Stimulating change through visual narratives\nPlymouth-based social enterprise\, FotoNow\, has been using the power of film and creative media to enable people’s voices to be heard since 2010. Hot on the heels of their COP26 presentation on how media narrative affects the activist’s communication\, FotoNow’s James Ellwood will share their perspective on using visual media to stimulate change from the grassroots up. \nCrowdfunder: Using stories to win hearts\, minds and open pursestrings! (tbc)\nThe UK’s biggest crowdfunding platform has helped make 267\,000 great ideas a reality\, raising over £200 million to date. A Crowdfunder coach will share how to harness the all-important storytelling techniques to win hearts and minds and most importantly\, investment in your community cause. \nStorytelling in action: Sustainable Tiverton\nOn July 8\, three incredible projects went head-to-head in an exciting 24 hour live crowdfunding climate challenge to win a share of £10\,000. CAG Devon’s very own Sustainable Tiverton\, the area’s largest community action group\, secured first place. They needed to share their story to achieve this. This funding takes them within touch of opening a Sustainability Hub\, a dedicated space to take action\, share ideas\, learn new skills and engage the wider community in building a sustainable future. \nYou’ll hear from each contributor\, then have a chance to ask your questions as they come together for a Q and A Panel. This will be followed by breakout rooms/workshops picking up on the themes shared by the four contributors.  Throughout the event you’ll be encouraged to add your climate action promises to our online Pledge Wall. \nThis event is open to anyone\, anywhere with an interest in taking positive climate action in their communities\, in whatever shape that is. It’s also open to those in organisations\, academics and local authorities who also support community action for a more sustainable future. The event is free. \nBooking via Eventbrite.  \n

SUMMARY:CAG Devon Plastics Collaborate meeting - tackling single-use plastics in a post-pandemic world
DESCRIPTION:As part of #PlasticFreeJuly\, and as CAG Devon groups start to plan events again\, it seems timely to offer a Collaborate event. We’re inviting people concerned about plastic waste in their communities to come together again\, virtually at least. \n‘When Dawlish Against Plastic (DAP) was first formed in March 2018\, we decided that the Plastic Free Communities award offered by Surfers Against Sewage was sufficiently structured to show progress towards reducing single-use plastic in Dawlish. The pandemic has made the task more difficult but this goal remains achievable. The journey continues……..’ \nWe’re delighted to have Vanessa and Dave from DAP with us\, to share some insights and top tips around their work in gaining their “Plastic Free Communities” award. This is something several CAG Devon groups have achieved\, and several more are working towards it. \nVanessa and Dave are also keen to explore the challenges of tackling plastic waste in a post-pandemic world\, where the last 18 months has created a massive increase in single-use plastics\, and reversed some of those hard-won behaviour changes which had contributed to reductions in single-use plastics. \nDo join us as we discuss the challenges\, but also share positive actions and inspiration. If you are concerned about litter\, especially plastic litter\, in your community\, this will be 90 minutes well spent! \nIt will be online\, not just because we have all become adept at Zoom meetings\, but also considering the size of Devon\, it makes sense to do some things virtually. \nWe look forward to seeing you there. \nBook here. \n

SUMMARY:Getting back to it - Running events Safely
DESCRIPTION:This 90 minute session\, for CAG Devon group members\, will give you the tools and confidence to plan and run group events safely\, as Covid-19 restrictions are eased. \nThere will be a short presentation from Pete Wills\, Resource Futures\, then plenty of time for questions and discussion relating to your own forthcoming events and activities. \nLearning outcomes will include: \n– The key measures that must be put in place when running an activity \n– Being aware of the priority actions to put pragmatic safety measures in place and managing the risks presented by Covid-19 \nThere will be a follow-up online clinic for participants to come back to Pete with any specific questions. \nPete Wills\, Senior Consultant\, and Health and Safety advisor with Resource Futures (CAG Devon’s parent organisation)\, will be sharing his knowledge and expertise\, taking us through the latest Government guidance and what it means for CAG Group activities. He’ll share absolute measures that groups must have in place\, good practice principles and top tips for planning safe events. Whilst health and safety can seem quite a dry subject\, the need to plan realistic ways to minimise potential risk to those attending and running activities has never been more important as we move out of lockdown. \nWe will also be explaining about the updated suite of risk assessment templates\, which have been created to enable CAG Devon groups to easily tailor them to their own events\, without needing to be a Health and Safety expert yourselves.
