SUMMARY:Online Collaborate: Positive Tipping Points Toolkit Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join CAG Devon and Somerset for an engaging session with Peter Lefort\, who runs the Green Futures Network at the University of Exeter\, helping to apply the latest climate and environmental research into practice for organisations across the world. He has recently co-created the Positive Tipping Points Toolkit\, an open-source resource for applying a systems approach to working for transformative change. Peter also used to work on the CAG Project in Oxfordshire many moons ago\, and was the Co-Chair of the international Transition Network for 7 years. \nIn this session we will unpack the recently-launched Positive Tipping Points Toolkit\, a free resource co-produced to support the application of the latest research into how tipping points can occur in environmental and social systems. Through a series of interactive example tools\, you will learn more about the Positive Tipping Points framework\, and how it can be applied to support our work for change at local\, national\, and international levels of scale. \nCAG Devon and several of our groups helped shape this resource during a 2024 workshop\, where we explored how communities can influence positive tipping points and many will remember Peter from his keynote session at SkillShare24. \nThere’ll be plenty of space for questions and discussion\, and a chance to reflect on how this approach could strengthen the work of community action groups across our networks.

SUMMARY:Fixy Collaborate: How to Host a Tech Drop‑Off Point
DESCRIPTION:Join CAG Devon and CAG Somerset for a relaxed Q&A session to find out more about the Fixy Project and how your community action group could host a tech drop‑off point as part of a growing network across Devon and Somerset. \nFixy is a South West initiative that collects and refurbishes unwanted smart tech to help cut e‑waste and support people facing digital poverty. Working with Donate IT\, the team is setting up 40 new secure drop‑off points across Somerset\, Devon\, North Somerset and Dorset\, making it easier for people to donate laptops\, tablets\, mobile phones and other smart devices. Every item is securely wiped and refurbished for reuse\, or responsibly recycled if it can’t be repaired. \nFixy is now looking for community groups with suitable venues who might be interested in hosting a drop‑off point. In this session\, Linda from the Fixy team will talk through what’s involved — from time commitments and venue requirements to equipment and collection logistics. You’ll also have plenty of time to ask any questions you have.

This also builds on our SkillShare24 theme of “Resilience through Connecting”. \n———————————————————————————————————————– \nSkillShare25 promises to be a day of inspiration\, celebration\, good food\, practical workshops\, networking and hands-on creative stuff around local climate action. It’s a chance to meet with likeminded folk\, to reconnect and make new connections\, to give and take ideas and knowledge. It’s an opportunity to pause\, to remind ourselves that however big the issues facing the earth and climate are\, we can make a difference with our actions locally. We do remain stronger together. And we can boost our sense of wellbeing and resilience at the same time. Don’t forget to bring friends from your community groups so you can cover all the workshop options! \n———————————————————————————————————————– \nThis event is open to anyone with an interest in working locally with others to tackle climate issues locally. You don’t need to be actively doing things already. \nPlease spread the word\, share on social media\, in local news groups and with your family and friends. \nWhat’s happening \nWhilst we’re still finalising the programme\, you can expect a range of workshops and activities to dip into\, contribute to\, learn from and be inspired by\, including: \nGrowing through collaboration. Hear from Zoey (Exmouth Town Council’s award winning Climate Officer) and Nicky (Sideshore Community) about what they’ve learnt about the value of working together with local businesses\, voluntary groups\, schools and more. Take away some top tips to try in your community.\nTogether for Tomorrow. Rosie and Laura will be introducing this new 5 yr Lottery project\, which aims to build more climate action activities across Devon’s libraries\, and build new connections and strength collaboration with local CAG groups. They’ll be sharing some of the great work already happening in libraries\, including repair cafes\, community fridges\, swaps of all types and more. This morning workshop will be followed in the afternoon by a walk trip to CAG member Newton Abbot Community Shed\, co-located at Newton Abbot library. \nHow to set up and run a Seed Library\, Seed Swaps and a Community Garden. Linda from Newton Abbot Seed Library and Courtenay Centre\, will be sharing her learning from setting up these projects at the Courtenay Centre. You’ll have a chance to visit the on-site garden. \nThe Share Shed. Mark and Mirella will take you on a tour of the Share Shed\, the first mobile library of things. They’ll be answering questions about how to set up a library of things\, and sharing their recent work around taking the sharing (of things) message more widely\, including into libraries and other community assets. \nRetaining Volunteers. Where would we be without our volunteers\, the beating heart of all community groups? Hetty and Cathy from Devon Wildlife Trust will be sharing top tips and ideas for how to keep our volunteers happy and engaged\, drawing on their work with community groups across the county. \nStitching for Devon’s nature – a chance to get hands-on with needle and thread. South Devon Stitchers created a fabulous exhibition of Endangered Species in Devon – a project which started pre-covid. These works of art have been exhibited all over Devon. Hear from Jean about how the project was conceived\, developed and completed during a pandemic\, and the conversations and subsequent actions the exhibition has prompted. All this whilst having a play yourself with creating a small piece of embroidered work. No previous sewing experience necessary! \nHow we measure impact for nature projects? Cathy and Hetty from Devon Wildlife projects will be sharing their thoughts and ideas\, and welcome you to share yours\, around the sometimes tricky issue of how do we measure the difference we’re making for nature/biodiversity projects. \nPlus during networking breaks and lunch\, you’ll also have an opportunity to drop off your redundant tech (phones\, cables\, laptops) at our Tech Amnesty\, and update your wardrobe with our Winter Woollies & Festive Jumpers clothes swap (bring one or more to swap – with hangers!). \nVenue \nSkillShare25 will take place at The Courtenay Centre\, Kingsteignton Rd\, Newton Abbot – a venue easily accessible by bus\, train\, car\, bike\, or on foot. The nearest train station is Newton Abbot\, a 10-15 minute walk away. While there is limited parking at the venue (reserved mainly for Blue Badge holders and workshop facilitators)\, a large pay-and-display car park is available just two minutes away at Cricketfield Road. We encourage you to use public transport\, your feet/pedal power or car share (bring your friends). \nCharge \nThere is no charge for this event. If you wish to bring along a food item which could then be used by in a local Community Fridge\, that would be wonderful! \nLunch will be available on a Pay-As-You-Feel basis. Donation pots will be available. \nAs this is a great opportunity to network\, you are invited to bring along any leaflets about your own project for others to take away. There is some room for larger displays. Contact CAG Devon if you’d like to bring a display. \nWe look forward to seeing you there. Booking is essential for accurate catering numbers. Bring a friend or three\, and make it a grand day out!

SUMMARY:Bike Maintenance Workshop for Repair Cafe Volunteers
DESCRIPTION:Bike Maintenance Workshop for repair cafe volunteers – CAG Devon members only\nCAG Devon is partnering with Ride-On Cycling to offer a one day Bike Maintenance workshop on Sunday 26th October at Exeter Quay. \nThis course is being offered for FREE to volunteers undertaking bike repairs at Repair Cafes\, which are members of CAG Devon. \nCompleting this one-day course means that you are deemed to be a competent bike repairer at a Repair Cafe. \nYou’ll learn how to tackle the most common problems\, and those that are simplest to fix (without access to a full bike workshop). Course content includes: \n\nM-check – this thorough check teaches you how to assess your bike\, looking for faults that have already occurred and learning best ways to prevent problems happening again.\nBrakes – here we learn how to maintain our brakes and go through how to replace cables and pads. On hydraulic system\, we do not cover bleeding in this course\, but do cover pad replacement and how to look after your rotors and set up the caliper.\nGears – Gears are often somewhere people have real difficulties with. We will demystify the gears\, teaching you how to get crisp shifting every time and how to replace a gear cable. Not suited to electronic shifting.\nFree time – At the end of the course we leave a bit of time for anything extra not covered in the course\, or for further practice on what we have covered to help what we have taught sink in properly.\n\nYou can bring a bike to work on\, or we can provide you with one on the day. \nPlease aim to arrive for a prompt start at 10am. The course will finish at 4 pm. \nThere will be a half hour lunch break so bring a packed lunch and flask\, or visit one of the many great independent cafes nearby. \nNB The workshop\, whilst under cover\, is not overly warm. Please dress accordingly. Teas and coffees will be available through the day. \nGetting there: \nAddress: Ride-On Cycling\, 61 Haven Rd\, Exeter EX2 8DP \nPlease note there is no parking at the Workshop itself. There are several pay and display car parks located within a 5–10 minute walk including Havenbanks car parks 1 and 2\, and Cathedral and Quay car park. \nExeter St Davids train station is a 30-minute walk\, or 5-minute taxi journey along the River Exe. \n\n\n\nLocation\nRide-On Cycling\, EX2 8DP

SUMMARY:CAG Safeguarding Training session (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This free course is exclusively available to members of CAG Devon and CAG Somerset only. \nThe CAG Project recognises the importance of safeguarding and our shared responsibility to protect children and vulnerable adults from harm. To help groups feel confident in identifying and responding to any issues that may arise\, we are working with Ade Murphy from Creating Solutions to offer online safeguarding training. \nSafeguarding training is vital for community groups as it equips members with the skills to recognise and address signs of abuse or neglect\, promoting early intervention and protection for vulnerable individuals. It also fosters a culture of vigilance and accountability within the group\, enhancing trust and solidarity among members. It ensures compliance with legal requirements\, providing practical guidance on responding to concerns effectively. \nAde Murphy has been delivering Safeguarding Training for more than 30 years. As Safeguarding Lead for the Youth and Community Service in North Somerset\, Ade delivered training for Youth Workers and Community organisations across the area. As the Training and Staff Development Manager for a drugs and alcohol agency\, he continued as Safeguarding lead for the organisation\, whilst delivering annual training for staff\, volunteers and trustees. As a freelance trainer he continues to deliver to Village Hall trustees and community groups across Somerset and works with individual groups to support and develop their safeguarding policies and practice. \nIn this session you will have the opportunity to work with Ade and other CAG groups to understand your safeguarding responsibilities\, use case studies to explore a range of potential safeguarding scenarios\, and build on your confidence and knowledge in this area. \nAll CAG member groups must have a safeguarding policy in place.

SUMMARY:Growing Change Together: Building Food Resilience from the Ground Up
DESCRIPTION:Our food system is facing huge challenges — from climate change\, overuse of pesticides and ecological breakdown to rising food insecurity and inequality. \nCommunity groups like ours are already playing a vital role in building fairer\, more resilient local food networks. Whether you’re running a food bank\, growing on a community allotment\, organising a food share\, or supporting your local food hub\, this workshop is a chance to connect\, reflect\, and take the next steps together. \nWe’ll explore the barriers and opportunities we’re facing locally\, share practical ideas for increasing impact\, and look at how we can work more strategically to build sustainable\, healthy\, and just food systems. \nWorking Better Together for Local Food Resilience\nLocal food growers\, foodbanks\, larders\, community kitchens\, and food charities can have a far greater impact when they connect and collaborate. By building strong local food networks\, sharing resources\, mapping surplus and need\, and aligning growing efforts with community demand\, we can reduce waste and improve access to fresh\, nutritious food. Joint training\, shared infrastructure\, and coordinated volunteers help strengthen capacity\, while collective action can influence local policies\, secure land for growing\, and encourage public institutions to buy local. Together\, we can build stronger\, more resilient local food systems rooted in sustainability\, fairness\, and food justice. \nSome ideas that we may discuss: \n\nGleaning groups that collect surplus from farms for local foodbanks.\nCommunity fridges stocked with produce from local gardens and allotments.\nHarvest swaps between home growers and community kitchens.\nCooking workshops Cooking workshops that build community through shared food experiences — baking\, making\, and eating together while exploring different conversation topics. Workshops can focus on food staples or seasonal recipes that make use of local gluts and are especially welcoming to foodbank clients and community members looking to connect.\nPesticide Residue and Soil Health: There is growing concern about the impact of pesticides and declining soil health on our food system\, with evidence showing increased pest resistance\, the disruption of vital microbial networks in topsoil\, and reduced nutrient density in the food we eat — all of which pose risks to both human health and the wider environment.\nLocal food charters – a roadmap for building a better food future — shaped by the community to guide values and priorities.\n\nCraig Jolly from the Mushroom Food Network in Exmouth will be joining us to share the inspiring work he’s been doing to connect the community—delivering local food to those in need\, running bread-making classes\, hosting lunchtime meet-ups for home workers\, and bringing people together through pizza-making sessions.  He’ll be bringing some of his delicious homemade bread to share alongside a hearty soup made from organic local produce provided by the Eco Hub. The soup will be cooked on their Tawi Stove\, which not only prepares the meal but also produces biochar in the process. \nWe will meet in our polytunnel (weather permitting)\, so please dress up warmly and wear waterproof footwear.
