SUMMARY:CAG Devon SkillShare22
DESCRIPTION:For the first time since 2019 we are coming together in-person for our annual SkillShare. \nSkillShare22 promises to be a day of inspiration\, celebration\, good food\, practical workshops\, networking and hands-on creative stuff around local climate action. It’s a chance to meet with likeminded folk\, to reconnect and make new connections\, to give and take ideas and knowledge. It’s an opportunity to pause\, to remind ourselves that however big the issues facing the earth and climate are\, we can make a difference with our actions locally. We do remain stronger together. It’s also a chance to celebrate what the CAG Devon network has achieved through the pandemic\, how it’s growing and going from strength to strength. \nOur theme is “Joining the dots – community connections for climate action”. We’ll be exploring who in our communities we could be working with to add energy and value to the work that we do. We’ll be showcasing examples of where this has worked well\, for example\, running a repair cafe or community fridge in a library\, or how CAG Devon groups have worked with local businesses to reduce their use of plastics. We’re delighted to be co-hosting this event with local activists and CAG Devon group Dawlish Against Plastic. \nWe’ve got workshops through the day\, focussing on the practicalities of climate action locally\, whether it’s setting up a community fridge\, starting a Library of Things\, providing energy advice workshops in partnership with a community energy company\, working with schools to get things happening\, or coming together with your neighbours to tackle climate issues. You’ll also be able to take a tour of the Share Shed\, the pioneering mobile Library of Things\, and find out how to set one up\, as it will be parked up at the Hope Centre. \nYou can network over a delicious hot lunch\, cooked on the premises by CAG Devon group ReRooted. You can even have a go at learning furoshiki\, the Japanese art of wrapping presents with cloth. Perfect in the run up to C*******s (it’s too early to mention that word!). \nWe’re delighted to have a wealth of contributors confirmed so far\, including: \n\nDawlish against Plastic\nShare Shed – mobile Library of Things\nExeter Community Energy (ECOE)\nLibraries Unlimited\nNet Zero Visions – Devon Climate Emergency\nDevon Food Rescue Project\nSustainable Bradninch/DCC Waste Management team\nReConnect\nTransition Streets (Totnes)\nCAG Devon\nTeignbridge CVS. \n\nThere will be time to connect with others through the day\, and we’ll be creating an online notice board for offers and requests for support. There’ll be time for you to plan your next steps in your community. \nThis event is open to anyone with an interest in working locally with others to tackle climate issues locally. Please spread the word. \nSkillShare22 will take place at the aptly named Hope Centre. This new venue\, located to the rear of Sainsbury’s Dawlish\, is accessible on bus routes\, and by car. Nearest train stations are Dawlish Warren\, Starcross and Dawlish. There is parking at the venue and overflow parking can be used at the Sainsburys car park. \nCharge \nThere is no charge for this event. If you wish to bring along a food item which could then be used by ReRooted in their Community Fridge\, that would be wonderful! \nA suggested donation for lunch will be £5\, on a Pay-As-You-Feel basis. Donation pots will be available. \nAs this is a great opportunity to network\, you are also invited to bring along any leaflets about your own project for others to take away. There is some room for larger displays. Contact CAG Devon if you’d like to bring a display \nWe look forward to seeing you there.

SUMMARY:Volunteers - finding\, managing and supporting them (and yourself!)
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are the bedrock of communities. So much good is done by volunteers\, and so much good can come to people by volunteering. It’s not without its challenges though and many CAG Devon groups have reported a drop in volunteer numbers post-covid. \nThere’s still as much to be done\, so how do we find and recruit new volunteers\, and support them to be happy and productive with the time that they give? And how do we look after ourselves so that we don’t burnout through taking on too much? \nThis 90 minute online session will explore some of these issues and come up with practical\, effective tips to help support personal wellbeing as a volunteer. \nFacilitator: This session will be facilitated by Anja Kroening-Maynard\, Community Development Worker\, Assessor and Trainer from Teignbridge CVS. Anja has been working for Teignbridge CVS since 2009\, starting out as the Volunteer Centre Coordinator.  She has many years’ experience in community development work and teaching and training people of different ages\, abilities and backgrounds in anything from circus skills to ESOL and Volunteer Management.  Anja’s passion is developing and delivering relevant and engaging courses enabling learners to develop their skills in a supportive environment. ” I also feel very strongly about enabling people to take an active part in their local community and enabling groups to affect change.”

SUMMARY:Biochar - launch of our new research project with Uni of Plymouth. Meet biochar\, soil\, regenerative farming and biomimicry experts.
DESCRIPTION:Come to Blackdown Hills EcoHub and meet our research partners from Plymouth University who will introduce our project. Guest presenter Nicola Peel will share her vast experience of biochar and regenerative farming. Nicola has been working for over 20 years in the Ecuadorean Amazon. In 2016 she started an agroforestry project for the charity Rainforest Saver and is now working with around 100 farmers and 6 agricultural colleges. Their mission is to prevent tropical deforestation by regenerating the soil. Using the method of inga alley cropping they have had remarkable results. Nicola has spoken this year at the International Forest Gardening Symposium and The Oxford Real Farming Conference. Here is an email testimonial from Mike Donovan\, editor & publisher of Practical Farm Ideas www.farmideas.co.uk. Nicola is a Solutionist and regenerative agriculture is one of the crucial solutions we all need to be discussing wherever in the world we live. \nWe’ll also be joined by Carbon Farmers who have built an amazing biochar stove (with Esse/Aston University) which we’ll use to cook food\, whilst making biochar from twigs. James from Genesis Green Grocers\, Honiton has kindly agreed to cook with us and is bringing along his BBQ smoker to create delicious food\, hopefully with some of our veg from the Food Growing Community Field. \nHideo\, a research student from Reading University will share his findings on why there is such a slow take up for business/farming/households to use biochar. Phil and Rob\, local biochar experts will give us an update on carbon credit discussions and chemical properties of different feedstocks. \nIf you plan to join us\, please bring a camping/festival chair\, wear old clothes as we’re in a field\, please car share if you can as there is limited parking space.\nWe’ll have several stalls to raise money for our Blackdown Hills Eco Hub activities\, so you’ll be able to buy plants\, biochar\, (bring a box or waterproof bag for cheaper refills)\, sourdough bread\, pastries and homemade jam! Feel free to bring drinks to share.
