We’re also keeping a stretch of the main road in central Uffculme lightly maintained so that wildflowers can thrive and be enjoyed – so if the ‘Ponderers’ are not at the pond\, they’ll have become the ‘Wildflower Warriors’ and can be found along Commercial Road in the stretch between College Green and Highland Terrace junction. SUMMARY:If Trees Could Talk: The Future of the Forests
DESCRIPTION:Stories have framed how we see forests for millennia. Are our modern myths\, coloured now by political interests and the commercial interests of both industry and NGOs the right stories for a changing\, challenging and unknowable future? \nSir Harry Studholme manages the Perridge Forest near Exeter. The forest was the joint winner in the All-England Woodland Resilience Awards 2021 and won the Duke of Cornwall Gold Medal for Resilient Multi-Purpose Forestry in 2025. The forest has been managed for centuries and has been a microcosm of Devon forestry\, ebbing and flowing with the comparative profitability of agriculture and timber markets. Currently the woods are managed on a continuous cover\, close to nature\, basis sustainably producing more than 2\,000 cubic meters of timber a year\, while the farmland that lies around it and runs through it is largely organic and managed regeneratively. Harry was previously the chair of the South West Regional Development Agency\, the GB Forestry Commission and the FTSE listed Phaunos Timber Fund. Harry is an Honorary Professor at the University of Exeter and the chair of Adapt Biogas. \nHarry Barton is currently Chief Executive of EarthWatch Europe\, a trustee of the charity Rewilding Britain\, and chair of the Dartmoor Nature Alliance. He was previously Chief Executive of Devon Wildlife Trust and Earth Trust. He has held senior roles in Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and CPRE. He led a multi-partner project mapping opportunities for nature restoration at scale across the South West of England. He has worked closely with partners at the University of Exeter\, University of Plymouth\, the Met Office and elsewhere. How are they making space in our economy for their work and messages? \nRachel and Matt Hayes are the architect founders of Folia Architects\, an award-winning practice focussed on sustainable design and certified Passivhaus buildings. They emphasise natural materials and timber construction in bespoke new build homes\, eco-friendly barn conversions and collaborative community spaces that connect to their landscape. \nTim Craven founded The Arborealists artists’ collective (40 exhibitions and 9 publications to date) in 2013. He trained in fine art and Conservation\, and has worked in Conservation\, Collection Management\, and as a Curator. SUMMARY:Harvesting Resilience - Future Food\, Local Soil
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating resilient plants\, nourishing ecosystems\, strengthening local food systems in uncertain times \nWe will explore how local community gardens\, food groups and small-scale growers can build resilience to a changing climate by adapting how/what we grow. As rising food and fertiliser costs combine with the challenges of hotter summers\, stronger winds\, wet winters\, flooding\, drought\, and emerging pests and diseases\, communities may need to embrace a wider range of climate-tolerant trees (nuts) and perennial crops such as kales\, perpetual spinach\, tree spinach\, squash\, pumpkins\, and protein-rich foods including beans\, pulses and potentially lentils\, whilst supporting their local eco systems. \nWe’ll discuss practical approaches to climate-resilient growing\, including permaculture\, companion planting\, shade planting\, seed saving\, composting\, mulching\, water harvesting (rain gardens)\, storage and strategies for protecting and improving soil health during periods of extreme weather. \nThe workshop will also consider how more diverse and often overlooked edible plants\, along with responsible foraging\, can contribute to healthier diets\, stronger local food systems and improved microbiome diversity. Alongside cultivation techniques\, the session will explore how community gardens can work with food larders\, community kitchens and local cooking projects to introduce unfamiliar ingredients into everyday meals\, share recipes and food knowledge\, and strengthen community resilience in the face of future food challenges. \nWe’re delighted that Vicky McLachlan\, Nature Based Solutions Consultant\, Kathryn May\, Axminster Allotments\, Sue Holland\, Creative Beings\, Dr. Paul Cleave\, University of Exeter\, Melissa Harvey\, Compost Mentor with Sustainable South Hams\,  amongst others will be sharing their valuable experience.

DESCRIPTION:Residents across Cullompton are being invited to help shape a greener future for the town as the new Cullompton Green Group launches next month. The group is being set up by Carla Crofts\, Community Builder for Involve Mid Devon charity\, and has been made possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund. The funding will help bring local people together to take positive action for the environment and create projects that benefit the wider community. \nCullompton Green Group hopes to bring people together to share ideas\, make local changes and create practical activities that help both the environment and local residents. The group is open to anyone\, whether you are passionate about environmental issues or simply interested in getting involved in something positive within the community. \nThe launch event will be a chance to find out more about the project\, meet the team and help shape what the group becomes. Some early ideas already being discussed include preloved prom events\, clothes swaps\, seed swaps and surplus food cafés. The aim is to create activities that help people save money\, reduce waste and support a greener Cullompton. However\, the group is very much community led and local people are being encouraged to share their own ideas about the kinds of activities and projects they would like to see. \nPeople attending the launch event will have the chance to speak to the team\, learn more about the plans for the group and share their ideas. Involve Mid Devon’s Volunteer Coordinator will also be there so anyone interested in volunteering can find out more and sign up to get involved. Refreshments will be available and people are welcome to drop in at any point during the session. \nCarla Crofts said: “We’re really excited to launch Cullompton Green Group and bring together people who care about the future of our environment and community. SUMMARY:If Trees Could Talk: Arts-led Social Change
DESCRIPTION:What are mechanisms of the arts that enable and accelerate change? Why does it work? What are the political arguments for arts-led processes? \nCatherine West\, one of two UK artists in “The Creative Instigators Handbook” is the founder of Significant Seams\, and has led numerous community-engaged art projects. She has worked at two international arts festivals and as a researcher on an Erasmus project called “Art & Social Change.” She is coordinating the Devon “If Trees Could Talk” programme. \nClare Coghill was leader of Waltham Forest Council when they bid for and won the first-ever ‘‘London Borough of Culture” as part of an arts-led regeneration strategy. Now based in Bideford\, she chairs the Development Board. \nVanessa Miles\, is a photographer\, artist\, educator and social entrepreneur. She founded Well Image CIC which runs photography workshops to enhance wellbeing. Alongside reconnecting with one another\, we’ll also be exploring what’s next for SisterWood and gathering ideas from the people who know it best. \nThis is part of our co-production work\, meaning we’re creating the future of SisterWood with the girls and young women it serves. We’ll be exploring what has been most meaningful\, what participants would like to see more of\, and how we can continue building a supportive and empowering community. \nPlease note that this is a standalone community and co-production event rather than our longer woodland wellbeing programme. He is a renowned dowser. DESCRIPTION:Seedlings is a monthly reading group and workshop for plant-lovers to connect through seeds and the human-plant relationship. Together\, we explore how seeds can be powerful metaphors for resistance\, resilience\, and future possibility. Through games\, mapping\, and creative prompts\, we spark conversations\, build action lists around food justice\, and design ideas to support more food-growing across the city. It’s part reading group\, part conversation game\, and part design lab—gently shifting between reflection\, connection\, and co-creation. \nFor this March event\, we will be coming to Exeter and explore “the people who save seeds” through the work of Rowan White\, a seed keeper in the US\, who talks about resilience rooted in biodiversity and what’s encoded within us.

DESCRIPTION:Come along to the West Devon Wildlife Warden Scheme and Parklife (SW)’s meadow creation events in Tavistock to help transform local green spaces in into lively wildflower meadows. \nThis is a wonderful opportunity for all West Devon residents to dive in\, work hands-on\, and gain real experience in building new habitats. \nWork with us to prepare the sites and proceed with sowing wildflower seeds from local supplier\, Goren Farm.
