Dawlish Against Plastic was set up in March 2018 by a small group for people who want to reduce plastic consumption and increase the recycling of plastic-based products. Their aim was to make Dawlish a plastic-straw free town, establish the Refill Devon scheme in Dawlish and obtain Plastic Free Community Status from Surfers Against Sewage:
Dawlish Against Plastic has now achieved Plastic Free Community status from Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) for the Parish of Dawlish, including Dawlish Warren, Holcombe and Cockwood. This is just the beginning of the group’s journey to reduce plastic in Dawlish.
- Organising beach cleans in Dawlish.
- Raising awareness of alternatives to single-use plastics, for example through promoting the Refill Devon scheme and suggesting simple swaps.
- Running art competitions, which have so far included, designing a logo for Dawlish Against Plastic and an art competition run in conjuction with Dawlish College on the theme of ‘plastic pollution’.
- The group is now planning Dawlish’s first ever Go Green Fest
