Sustainable Tiverton is an umbrella group bringing together a range of fantastic sustainable community initiatives across Tiverton and the surrounding villages including Uffculme, Sampford Peverell, Burlescombe, Clayhanger, Halberton, Holcombe Rogus, Hockworthy, Huntsham and Uplowman.
Here are details of Sustainable Tiverton’s constituent groups and their activities:
ReROOTed surplus food café
Monthly community café stopping surplus food going to waste. Volunteer cooks turn surplus food from supermarkets and local suppliers into a delicious meal available free to anyone who wants to come along.
Distributing free surplus food to anyone who wants it via a fridge in Tiverton Library.
Uffculme Green Team
A group of volunteers working to promote sustainable living in the village of Uffculme, encouraging people to reduce, re-use, re-cycle, and tackling local litter. Uffculme Green Team works with local businesses and organisations and organise events, including the very successful Uffculme Green Day. The group has recently achieved ‘Plastic Free Community’ status for Uffculme.
Give or Take
A re-use event held every few months in the CreaTIV Hub over a few days. People can bring and take items to save them being thrown away.
Tiverton Repair Café
Repairing household items including clothing and textiles, electrical items, and toys.
Plastic Free Tiverton
Working to gain ‘Plastic Free Town’ Status in Tiverton to reduce the use of single-use plastics.
Recycle Things for Free
Online facility on Sustainable Tiverton website for giving away unwanted items.
Raising awareness of composting and the importance of looking after our soil. Running popular Dr Compost events.
Tiverton Apple Day
An annual event at Tiverton Pannier Market where local people bring apples to press for juice or cider.
Tiverton Bee Team
Increasing bee populations which are critically low, through bee-keeping courses and advice. Also selling honey locally.
Tiverton Tree Team
Planting thousands of trees across the area and helping school children grow saplings.
Tiverton Community Energy Group
Exploring options for community energy projects, including hydro power on the River Exe and wind power.
Green Transport and Active Families Tiverton
Working with Devon County Coucil with a view to planning a new bike lane between Bolham and Tiverton. Working with Active Devon to lead family cycle rides.
Sustainable Tiverton is part of the Transition Network. It has grown considerably from its beginnings in 2008. The Group was formerly known as TACT (Tiverton Area Communities Transition) and, before that, Sustainable Villages.
